Build an online store: plan the platform, costs and implementation
A guide for retailers: clarify requirements, assess Shopify, PrestaShop and Shopware, and compare doing it yourself with agency implementation.
Quick answer
A sensible order for building an online store is to clarify your business model and workflows, choose a suitable platform, agree costs and responsibilities, then test the complete purchase process. Shopify can be a good starting point for many standard requirements. PrestaShop and Shopware are particularly worth considering when custom processes and control over the technology carry more weight.

A store project often starts with a design template or pricing comparison. Yet other questions matter more: what products do you sell, how do orders reach the warehouse, and who handles operations after launch? An attractive interface cannot compensate for missing product data, unclear responsibilities or an awkward shipping process.
Which requirements should be clear before choosing a platform?
Start by describing a typical order from purchase through to a possible return. A small retailer with a manageable catalogue needs a different solution from a medium-sized business with customer-specific pricing, several warehouses and its own inventory system. Record which workflows already work and which ones the new store should actually change.
- Catalogue: product types, variants, accessories and required information.
- Customers: consumers, businesses, countries, languages and price groups.
- Processes: stock, shipping, returns, invoicing and customer service.
- Integrations: inventory software, ERP, accounting, PIM and marketplaces.
- Responsibilities: content, technology, privacy, marketing and maintenance.
- Budget: setup, operation, extensions and your own time.
- Success criteria: commercially viable orders and reliable processes.
Shopify, PrestaShop or Shopware: which fits the project?
At sjmedia, we see Shopify as a natural option for many small and medium-sized retailers when standard processes, a quick setup and a centrally hosted store are priorities. Still, check the apps, data flows and ongoing fees against your actual requirements. A feature that feels good in a demo must also work with your products and orders.
As an open-source platform, PrestaShop offers flexibility over hosting, extensions and custom business logic. This is useful when existing processes need close integration with the store. A freely available core does not mean setup, modules, hosting and support are free. Try our PrestaShop demo for a first impression.
Shopware is another possible foundation for custom retail processes. Distinguish between its Community Edition, commercial offerings and operating models. A fair comparison needs clarity about the features and support included in each offer. A provider’s country of origin is not a reliable selection criterion; Shopify also supports your own domain.
For a closer comparison, read PrestaShop or Shopify and PrestaShop or Shopware. If you already have a WooCommerce store, WooCommerce or Shopify covers that starting point separately.
Build the store yourself or use an agency?
Doing it yourself can make sense if your catalogue is straightforward, you have time for setup and standard features cover your processes. A tested theme can provide a sensible foundation. There is no technical reason to dismiss every ready-made or self-built solution.
An agency becomes particularly valuable when data needs migrating, systems need connecting or custom features need developing. Agree concrete deliverables: an approved concept, specified features, a test scope, training and clear contacts after launch. Even with an agency, decisions about products, prices and internal workflows remain yours.
A shared approach often works well: your team supplies product knowledge and content, while the agency handles architecture, setup and technical acceptance. Ask for these responsibilities to be specified in the proposal. A low starting price helps little if necessary tasks only emerge later as extras.
How much does it cost to build an online store?
A reliable budget separates one-off project costs from ongoing spending. Setup can include planning, design, configuration, data migration, integrations and testing. Depending on the solution, operating costs include subscriptions or hosting, extensions, payment processing and support. Also allow time for product data, customer service and marketing.
Compare proposals on the same basis. An offer including data migration and ERP integration cannot usefully be compared with theme setup alone. Our store cost calculator lets you compare assumptions for Shopify, PrestaShop and Shopware over five years. It supports comparison but does not replace a project-specific quotation.
What does “buying an online store” mean?
This may mean commissioning a new store or acquiring an existing retail business. This guide covers building and commissioning a store. Buying an operating business also requires checks of contracts, rights, data, inventory and financial performance. The price of a technical store build says little about that.
How does a finished interface become a reliable store?
Test with realistic sample data before launch. An order with several variants, different shipping conditions or a partial return reveals more than a demonstration using one test product. Check order confirmation, stock synchronisation, payment, invoicing and refunds together. Record who fixes errors and how you detect a failed integration transfer.
When replacing an existing store, include current URLs and their appropriate new destinations in the plan. Content and internal links must match the new structure. Permanent redirects help visitors and search engines move across, but do not guarantee unchanged rankings. We advise on this through our store migration service.
What should you have decided by the end of planning?
You should be able to explain why the chosen platform supports your processes, which tasks are included in the budget and who will operate the store. At sjmedia GmbH, we connect these questions with technical implementation. Bring your catalogue, existing systems and two or three typical order workflows to the first conversation. These usually provide a more practical starting point than a long, unprioritised wish list.
