WooCommerce or Shopify: which platform suits your business?

Why Shopify can suit merchants without an in-house technical team, when WooCommerce makes sense and where PrestaShop offers an alternative.

Quick answer

We consider Shopify first for a new store when you want the provider to handle hosting and much of the platform operation. WooCommerce is particularly relevant when you already have a WordPress strategy and reliable technical support. PrestaShop is worth considering for greater control over hosting and customisation. Your workflows, integrations and overall costs determine the right choice.

Two stores can sell the same number of products yet need different platforms. One merchant works alone, ships from one warehouse and wants minimal technical administration. Another has a small range but needs customer-specific prices, ERP integration and several purchasing approvals. Product count alone rarely identifies the right platform.

At sjmedia GmbH, Shopify is often our first recommendation for a new store without an in-house technical team. The provider operates the platform, leaving your team more time for products, content and sales. We test that recommendation against daily work: how does product data reach the store, who processes orders and what happens when a customer returns an item?

What is the difference between WooCommerce and Shopify?

Shopify is a hosted platform. The provider operates the technical foundation while you configure products, design, apps and business workflows. That reduces server administration. Your store still needs decisions, maintenance and checks, for example when apps, tracking or order transfers change.

WooCommerce is an open-source solution built on WordPress. You choose hosting, extensions and technical support. The provider describes the core software as free; hosting, payments, extensions and services require separate budgets. More control over the technical environment also means more responsibility for running it.

Which platform suits small merchants?

For small teams, we would assess Shopify first. The provider handles hosting and the platform, reducing the work of organising servers and software operation. This helps when owners or employees manage the store alongside purchasing, advice and shipping. Your workflows should fit the chosen plan and a manageable set of apps.

WooCommerce can suit a business with a well-maintained WordPress site, content that supports sales and a reliable technical partner. However, a small store is not automatically simple. Subscriptions, configurable products or individual pricing can be demanding even with few products.

Consider a hypothetical specialist retailer selling a standard range online and shipping orders itself. We would first compare day-to-day maintenance. A consultancy-led offer with extensive WordPress content and existing technical support may lead to a different decision. These are illustrative situations, not client case studies.

What else do medium-sized businesses need?

Shopify can also provide a foundation for medium-sized businesses when ERP, warehouse and other systems connect reliably. Central platform operation can reduce work for the internal team. The key question is: how reliably does the proposed Shopify solution handle our workflows? A demonstration store alone cannot answer this.

Test a complete order: an ERP product update, a multi-item order, partial delivery, a return and the correct stock adjustment. Also demonstrate a failure, such as an interrupted synchronisation. Establish who detects and resolves it. An available plugin is not proof of a reliable process.

Define B2B needs precisely. Company accounts, individual price lists, payment terms and approvals must be checked against actual requirements. Neither the label “B2B” nor company size alone determines suitability.

Is WooCommerce cheaper than Shopify?

Not automatically. WooCommerce has no monthly licence fee for its core software, but hosting, support, paid extensions and internal work affect total costs. Equally, Shopify apps and additional fees can substantially exceed an initially inexpensive subscription.

Compare a full operating period using the same assumptions for setup, operation, payment volume, order numbers and expected development. Include your own time. Weekly manual data corrections are part of the platform’s real cost.

Our Shopify guide covers plans, additional costs and a worked example. For WooCommerce, request specific hosting and support proposals. Broad claims such as “WordPress is free” or “Shopify includes everything” do not support a sound investment decision.

If you are also considering PrestaShop or Shopware, use our store cost calculator. It compares development and five years of operating costs for those three platforms. Enter your own budgets and check the assumptions. WooCommerce is not included and needs a separate calculation with the same cost categories.

Who handles maintenance and updates?

WooCommerce needs a defined process for WordPress, the store plugin, theme and extensions. The official update guide recommends current backups, a separate test environment and checks of key store functions. Agree who does this work and how changes can be rolled back.

Shopify operates its platform, but customisations, apps and connected systems must still work together. After changes, check the basket, payments, order transfers and important tracking. Less server work does not remove the need for operational and technical checks.

Which platform is better for SEO and AI search?

No platform guarantees search rankings or mentions in AI answers. Both can support search-friendly stores. Implementation quality, useful product information, relevant category content and clear internal links are among the deciding factors.

Google continues to point to core SEO requirements for AI Overviews and AI Mode, without special mandatory markup. Assess how easily your team can maintain product data, buying guidance and expert answers.

For example, a spare-parts retailer needs reliable model, year, compatibility and availability information. This supports buying decisions and gives search systems factual material. An AI plugin alone cannot fix missing or contradictory data. See our GEO and AI visibility service for online stores.

Which requirements should you document before deciding?

A short requirements list provides a useful starting point. Compare providers and quotes using these seven areas:

  • Products: types, variants, configurations and sources of product data.
  • Customers and markets: B2C, B2B, Germany, Switzerland, other countries and languages.
  • Order processing: warehouses, shipping, returns and transfer to accounting or ERP.
  • Payments: methods, currencies, fees and refunds.
  • Responsibilities: content, technology, incidents and further development.
  • Overall budget: setup, operation, extensions, support and internal time.
  • Migration and growth: exports, redirects, additional channels and future workflows.

Separate launch essentials from features that can follow later. This avoids building a complex solution around uncertain future plans. Swiss merchants should explicitly check Swiss-franc payments, processing arrangements and delivery routes. A multilingual theme does not automatically solve these requirements.

When is PrestaShop the right alternative to Shopify?

When your business needs more control over software and hosting, PrestaShop is an important alternative we consider. The self-hosted Classic version offers open-source software, a choice of hosting provider, modules and custom development. That freedom requires clear responsibility for maintenance, security and development.

As a PrestaShop agency, we assess whether your product logic, ordering workflows or integrations justify a more individual solution. Does Shopify’s central operation save more work, or does PrestaShop’s greater control offer more value? We establish requirements and costs for either route and consider Shopware where appropriate.

Our implementation work focuses on Shopify, PrestaShop and Shopware, and we are open about that. A functioning WooCommerce store does not automatically need replacing. For a new store or major rebuild, we check whether Shopify simplifies operation or PrestaShop provides the flexibility your processes need.

How do you reach a well-founded platform decision?

Have important workflows demonstrated with your data, then compare costs, responsibilities and unresolved issues. Record which functions require extensions or custom development. This is more useful than a generic ranking claiming one platform is best.

We consider Shopify for a straightforward start with less in-house platform administration. Where more control and customisation are needed, we assess PrestaShop. As a Shopify agency, we connect implementation with SEO, GEO and conversion work. To start a conversation about platform selection, bring your current situation, main bottlenecks and an initial budget from the calculator.
