PrestaShop costs: setup, hosting and ongoing operation
Understand the costs beyond the free download and build a transparent five-year PrestaShop budget.
Quick answer
PrestaShop Classic is free to download; setup, hosting, modules and support still cost money. For merchants with tailored requirements, we particularly recommend PrestaShop for its adaptability and choice of operating environment. A multi-year budget with a clearly defined scope establishes whether those advantages justify the investment.

A free download is not a working online store. To plan PrestaShop costs, first define what must work at launch and who will look after the store afterwards. We separate implementation, ongoing operation and later development. This makes quotes comparable without treating a standard store and a custom ERP integration as the same project.
Why do we favour investing in PrestaShop at sjmedia?
For merchants with tailored requirements, PrestaShop is our preferred starting point. Open software and a choice of hosting provide room to develop a store around the business. We see its value beyond the free download: existing capabilities can be extended to fit particular workflows instead of forcing every process into a standard pattern.
That flexibility is especially relevant when the store must work closely with your ERP, catalogue and internal operations over the long term. It requires a planned budget and clear technical ownership. This is where our PrestaShop specialism helps: we assess existing capabilities, avoid unnecessary custom development and include ongoing support in the plan from the outset.
Is PrestaShop free?
PrestaShop Classic is available as a free download. You arrange hosting and implementation separately. PrestaShop also offers other packages with different scopes. This article covers Classic with hosting of your choice; its calculation cannot simply be applied to a Hosted package. Manufacturer source: PrestaShop Classic.
The useful question is therefore what your business needs to accept orders reliably. Clean product data, suitable payment and shipping processes, and clear responsibility for ongoing operation all belong in the discussion.
What should a PrestaShop quote include?
A useful estimate states both the work included and its boundaries. “Store setup” might mean installation alone, or it might include design, data migration and testing. Ask for a specific scope.
- Setup and design: installation, theme adjustments, navigation and required pages.
- Data and migration: products, variants, customers and explicitly agreed additional data.
- Modules and integrations: licences, configuration, adjustments and renewals.
- Hosting and operation: server capacity, backups, monitoring and restoration.
- Maintenance and testing: updates, staging and agreed functional checks.
- Payments and development: variable processing fees and separately budgeted improvements.
Avoid counting the same service twice. If hosting already includes backups, an extra backup service needs a clear purpose. Buying a module does not automatically pay for its configuration.
What drives setup and module costs?
Ten well-maintained product families may require less work than a small but inconsistent dataset. Variants, images, category assignments and source quality matter. A migration also involves content and functionality that may not appear in a standard product export.
Our project work has shown the importance of recording modules and their data. Historical records or reports held in an accounting integration should not be assumed to transfer automatically. Define what must survive and how the transfer will be checked before estimating the work. Our guide to PrestaShop migration and module data explains this further.
For extensions, we start with the task: does an existing module cover it, does it need adapting, and who maintains those changes after a version upgrade? A low purchase price does not answer these questions.
How much hosting and maintenance do you need?
Product count alone does not determine hosting requirements. Concurrent visitors, searches, variants, imports and background jobs also affect load. A technical assessment of the existing store is useful before committing to a larger change. Replacing a server without diagnosing the problem is no more reliable than choosing the cheapest package regardless of workload.
We advised a B2B merchant who was considering Shopify because of performance and usability problems. The merchant stayed with PrestaShop. An update and a move from shared hosting to a managed server were completed; the project feedback was that the store then ran quickly. No published measurements are available, and the improvement cannot be attributed to the update alone. The useful lesson is that improving an existing store can be an alternative to migration.
A maintenance agreement should define checks, incident reporting and the services included when something fails. Our task lists distinguish areas such as the storefront, orders, shipping and visual presentation. The merchant contributes the back-office workflows actually used by the business. These processes should still work before an update is accepted.
How do you calculate a five-year budget?
Add one-off implementation to running costs over a consistent period. Here is a hypothetical planning example, not a market price or an sjmedia quote: €7,500 implementation, €100 monthly hosting, €500 annual module renewals and €2,400 annual maintenance total €28,000 over five years. The calculation is 7,500 + 60 × 100 + 5 × 500 + 5 × 2,400.
That means €11,600 in year one and €4,100 in each subsequent year. All assumed figures exclude VAT and remain constant throughout the model. Payment processing, marketing, internal staff time and later development are excluded. A custom integration is included only if expressly covered by the assumed implementation scope.
Scope is the main variable. If an integration adds €3,000 upfront and €600 per year, the same five-year model increases by €6,000. These are illustrative assumptions too. They show why the hosting price alone is not enough to base a decision on.
Is PrestaShop cheaper than Shopify or Shopware?
That depends on requirements, the operating model and support. PrestaShop can suit businesses seeking a dedicated ecommerce platform with a choice of hosting. It does not guarantee lower costs. Complex custom functionality can cost more than a standard implementation on another platform.
Use our store cost calculator for an initial comparison of PrestaShop, Shopify and Shopware. Its assumptions provide guidance, not a binding quote. Our guides to Shopify costs and Shopware costs explain those budgets separately.
How do you arrive at a dependable budget?
Bring together the required functionality, main data sources and expected order workflows. Separate launch essentials from later improvements. PrestaShop is our strongest area of platform experience at sjmedia. In our PrestaShop consultancy, we also check what can be reused and where new work is actually needed. That produces a defined project scope rather than a deceptively cheap headline price.
