Shopware costs: what does a store really cost?
Understand Community Edition, subscriptions, hosting, extensions and maintenance to plan your overall Shopware budget.
Quick answer
There is no universal total price for a Shopware store. Community Edition is available free of charge, while commercial plans add licence costs. Your requirements, implementation and operation determine the overall budget. Compare the same scope over the same period.

The licence is only one part of Shopware costs. A realistic budget also includes setup, hosting, extensions, integrations and ongoing technical support. Separating these items helps compare quotes and avoid later surprises.
Is Shopware free?
Shopware offers Community Edition as a free open-source core. You or your service providers are responsible for setup and maintenance. Free software does not make building and running a sales-ready store free. Source: Shopware Community Edition.
Separate software from project work. An available feature may still need configuration, data and testing. Payment methods, shipping rules and ERP connections require work even when the software core carries no licence fee.
What do commercial Shopware plans cost?
On 9 October 2026, the official German pricing page listed Rise from €600 per month, Evolve from €2,400 per month and individual pricing for Beyond, excluding VAT. Shopware states that actual prices depend on Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) and other individual factors. Starting prices are therefore not a binding total for your business. Choose according to the features and support your project needs. A higher plan should address a clear requirement. Equally, the cheapest licence is no saving if essential workflows then require expensive additions.
Which additional costs belong in the budget?
Separate one-off work, recurring charges and costs per order. This shows which expenses arise before launch and which grow with the business.
| Item | What to clarify |
|---|---|
| Setup and design | Template or individual design, configuration, data imports, testing and training. |
| Hosting and operation | Operating model, capacity, backups, monitoring and responsibilities; do not count included services twice. |
| Extensions | Required features, licensing model, recurring fees and update compatibility. |
| Integrations | ERP, PIM and other services, including setup, synchronisation and error handling. |
| Technical support | Updates, tests, troubleshooting and an agreed scope for changes. |
| Payment processing | Provider rates and actual payment mix; show separately from licensing and hosting. |
Document what the quote includes. “Integration available” does not establish which data is transferred or who responds when synchronisation fails.
What affects development costs?
Product count alone is not a reliable guide. A large, well-prepared catalogue may be easier to import than a few products with complex variants, inconsistent data and special pricing rules. Individual design, multiple sales channels and existing systems also affect the work.
Identify essential launch functions and those that can follow later. A comparable scope might include a design template, core setup, payment methods, shipping configuration and a clearly defined product import. Special workflows and extra features must be listed separately.
A fixed project price is of limited use without a defined scope. Compare assumptions, your own responsibilities and exclusions as well as totals.
PrestaShop can also be considered as an open-source store platform. PrestaShop Classic is free to download, but hosting, implementation, modules and support need a budget. Compare the actual functions and ongoing services you require. Source: PrestaShop Classic.
How do you calculate five years of Shopware costs?
A starting formula is setup plus 60 monthly budgets plus five annual budgets plus variable fees. Keep monthly and annual items separate to avoid double-counting. Different first-year costs, price changes and later additions need separate treatment.
A purely hypothetical example: €15,000 setup, €300 in monthly fixed costs and €2,400 annual technical support total €45,000 over five years. Payment fees and later projects are excluded. This is neither a market price nor a quote, and specifically does not represent a Shopware Rise plan. The figures only illustrate the method.
Use our store cost calculator to compare PrestaShop and Shopify. Check whether payment fees are included and replace model assumptions with your own quotes. A starting price is only useful when you understand which necessary items it covers.
When should you compare PrestaShop or Shopify?
A comparison helps when choosing a platform or reassessing your current store’s costs. Give providers the same requirements: who operates the store, which customisations are needed, what data must move between store and ERP, and what does support cover?
Our PrestaShop or Shopware guide discusses suitability. The Shopify cost guide supports budget planning. Workflows should guide the platform decision; the calculation then establishes its financial implications.
What should you prepare for a quote?
- Whether you sell to consumers, businesses or both.
- Product data, variants and special pricing rules.
- Required payment and shipping methods.
- Existing systems and necessary data transfers.
- Desired design and agreed launch features.
- Responsibilities for operation, updates and future changes.
