Google AI Mode and AI Overviews: what changes for online stores?
Customers can compare products within AI search. What does that mean for your store? We explain which content helps and which figures to monitor.
Quick answer
Google AI Mode and AI Overviews can move part of the buying advice into search itself. Retailers should focus content on specific buying decisions, keep product data consistent and analyse AI impressions, visits and orders separately.

Google AI Mode changes how customers search for and compare products. Buying advice can begin within Google before someone visits your store. For retailers, this means being considered as a source for relevant questions and helping customers make a buying decision on the linked page.
At sjmedia GmbH, we always consider AI visibility alongside the store itself. A mention achieves little if the link leads to the wrong variant or customers then have to search for delivery information. That is why we bring SEO, product data and conversion optimisation together.
How do AI Mode and AI Overviews differ?
AI Overviews are AI-generated answers within some Google search results. AI Mode is a separate search experience for more detailed questions, comparisons and follow-up questions. Both can link to websites as sources, but may select different content. Google explains both search features.
Consider a customer looking for walking boots. They might start with “men’s walking boots”. In AI Mode, they can describe their needs in more detail: “I need waterproof walking boots for wide feet, mainly for easy mountain hikes. Which models would suit me for up to €180?”
For a retailer, this question contains more than a product name. It concerns fit, intended use and price. A store that explains these connections clearly provides information that helps customers choose.

Will AI answers reduce visits to online stores?
This can happen for individual searches. When a short answer is enough, there is less reason to open a website. A product comparison, however, may leave questions that can only be answered in the store.
Which visits disappear makes a significant difference. A guide might explain waterproof ratings in outdoor clothing. A category page helps customers choose a rain jacket. A product page sells a particular model. These pages serve different purposes and should be assessed separately.
Our advice: start with the categories that matter to your business. Are organic visits, orders and baskets developing differently? Have prices, availability or the range changed at the same time? A fall in total search traffic alone does not explain the role of AI answers.
Which content helps customers choose products?
Useful content answers questions customers genuinely need to resolve before buying. Your customer service team will already know many of them: compatibility for spare parts, dimensions and assembly for furniture, or fit and fabric for clothing.
Imagine a spare-parts page that says only “high-quality, robust and versatile”. Customers still do not know whether the part fits their appliance. Clear model compatibility, connection dimensions and details of required accessories help them move forward.
This does not always require a new guide. Put the answer where the question arises. Compatibility belongs on the product page. A comparison of different designs may belong on a category page or in a buying guide.
We recommend filling these gaps first. This improves advice within the store and provides specific information that AI search can cite.
Why does product data matter for AI search?
Product information must be clear and current. A different price on the product page and in the feed, or a sold-out variant marked as available, creates conflicting information.
For Google, structured product data on the website and a Google Merchant Center feed complement each other. Both help Google understand and cross-check product information. Google explains how to supply product data.
Do not just check whether a feed exists. Check what it actually sends and which page customers reach through the product link. For a product available in several sizes, the advertised size must match the offer on the destination page.
Customers in Germany and Switzerland also need the relevant delivery terms. A German-language page does not establish whether a product can be delivered to Zurich, what shipping costs or which currency applies. This information should be easy to find before purchase.
How can retailers measure visibility in AI Mode?
Google now offers a dedicated Search Console report. The Generative AI performance report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, including breakdowns by page, country and device. According to Google, the report was rolled out globally by 31 August 2026. It may still be unavailable for sites with too few impressions. AI performance report documentation
An impression initially means that a link to your website was displayed. Whether it led to a visit or an order requires separate analysis.
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| AI impressions | How often links to your store appear in the reported AI search features |
| Organic clicks | Which pages attract visits from Google Search |
| Baskets and orders | What these visitors subsequently do in your store |
| Revenue and contribution margin | The commercial value of those orders |
The AI report and regular search report overlap. Do not add their impressions together as a supposed total reach. These reports alone also cannot identify revenue attributable exclusively to a particular AI answer.
In a GEO audit, we also test a defined set of relevant questions. We record whether a brand is mentioned, which sources are linked and whether the information is correct. Repeated checks with the country, date and search system recorded reveal changes more reliably than isolated screenshots.
What should online retailers check now?
Start with an important product category. This keeps the initial effort manageable while showing where your store lacks information.
- Customer questions: Which questions recur in sales advice, support and internal search?
- Accessibility to search engines: Can they access and index important category, product and advice pages?
- Product data: Do variants, prices and availability match across pages and feeds?
- Buying advice: Can customers find specific selection criteria, comparisons and suitability information?
- Germany and Switzerland: Are delivery areas, currency, shipping costs and times clear for each market?
- Measurement: Are visibility, visits and orders recorded separately and compared over appropriate periods?
These checks are useful for PrestaShop, Shopify and Shopware, as well as other platforms. Technical implementation varies. The question of whether customers can find the information they need remains the same.
Our article “GEO for online stores: how can customers find you in AI search?” explains how to work through these points.
Frequently asked questions about Google AI Mode
Do I need to register my store for AI Mode?
No separate GEO registration is required. Alongside indexing and technical access, check the “Search generative AI” setting in Search Console. Google includes sites by default; subordinate properties can inherit the setting from a parent property. Google on participation in AI search features
Should AI search change my advertising budget?
Base that decision on campaign and store data. More AI impressions alone do not show that a Google Ads campaign has become less profitable. Consider SEO, paid search and conversion optimisation together so visibility improvements benefit the store.
