ChatGPT Shopping: prepare your store’s product data
How merchants can align variants, prices and availability, and use PrestaShop to maintain product information deliberately.
Quick answer
For ChatGPT Shopping, maintain clear, current and consistent product data. Start with variants, prices, availability and the correct destination page. Clean data provides a better foundation for processing, but does not guarantee recommendations. Direct submission requires an available and suitable delivery route.
In this article
A customer needs a desk lamp with particular dimensions and a compatible connector. Your store stocks the right model, but its page contains only a generic description while the specification is buried in a PDF. Customers and systems processing the information lack an accessible basis for the decision.
For ChatGPT Shopping, we recommend checking the underlying catalogue first. Extra promotional sentences do little when the variant, price and availability do not match. This article addresses product data work; our GEO guide covers the broader foundations.
How does product data contribute to ChatGPT Shopping?
OpenAI describes product suggestions as drawing on several information sources and the context of the request. Product metadata is part of this. Not every product is necessarily shown, and information may lag behind store changes. For our work, this makes data quality an essential investigation, not evidence of a particular ranking.
Start with an item customers can actually buy. Follow it from the internal source through any existing export to its public product page. This exposes inconsistencies before more products are processed in the same way.
Which six details should merchants check first?
Choose a small group of important products with different variants. Record these points for each item:
- Identity: a unique item identifier, brand and understandable product name.
- Version: size, colour, connector or other purchase-relevant variant attributes.
- Offer: price and currency for the actual version and intended market.
- Availability: orderable status consistent with the destination page.
- Media: images showing the offered variant and what is actually included.
- Destination: an accessible product URL with a clear description and consistent details.
This is our editorial review framework, not a complete technical feed specification. Required fields and permitted values depend on the delivery route and must follow its current documentation.
Why do variants deserve particular attention?
The lowest price might apply to a small version while the image shows a larger one. Combining those details into an apparently single offer creates an incorrect expectation. The problem starts in the store and may carry into other presentations.
Check more than the parent product. Open the specific variant and compare its price, photograph and attributes. Exports must preserve the same relationships. Where sources use different identifiers, transfer needs documented mapping rather than guesses based on similar names.
How can prices and stock remain consistent?
Assign an authoritative source to each data type. If the ERP owns stock, establish when updates reach the store and export. Timestamps and a verifiable update run are more useful for troubleshooting than a statement that an integration works automatically.
Test changes as well: an out-of-stock item, a new price and a disabled variant. What appears on the product page afterwards, and what does the export contain? Subsequent processing by an external platform is not entirely under your control. Do not promise immediately identical information everywhere.
What does this mean for PrestaShop and Shopify?
According to OpenAI’s shopping guidance, Shopify product data is already integrated through Shopify Catalog. OpenAI also describes an application route and technical documentation for merchants interested in direct product feeds. Source checked on 20 October 2026.
This does not establish an automatic PrestaShop connection. We first assess the available delivery route and access requirements, then determine whether an existing connector fits or a tailored export is needed.
We particularly value PrestaShop where merchants need their own rules for catalogues, variants and data sources. Implementation can be designed around those requirements. That flexibility entails maintenance and technical responsibility; it does not confer a preferred ChatGPT ranking. An “AI-ready” label replaces neither a data review nor a working delivery route.
How do you assess improvement?
Start with a documented comparison of your data before and after changes. Have conflicting prices been resolved? Do variant images and destination pages agree? Are updates transferred completely? You can verify these outcomes even without an appearance in an AI answer.
Assess AI answers separately using our AI visibility measurement plan. A mention does not prove that the edited export caused it. As a PrestaShop agency, we connect traceable data maintenance with suitable implementation, so information is correct in your own store and can then be passed on reliably.
