Shopify SEO: what to check before adding another app

Quick answer

Start Shopify SEO by matching important search queries to suitable pages. Then check accessibility, page titles, internal links and rendered content. An app is useful when it addresses an identified gap. Switching platforms is not a universal SEO remedy.

An SEO app flags missing fields, yet orders from search remain low. There is no contradiction: complete fields do not establish whether the right page meets the right buying intent. For Shopify SEO, we start with pages and queries rather than a shopping list of apps.

Which foundations does Shopify provide?

Shopify’s SEO overview describes built-in features including generated sitemaps, canonical tags and editable SEO information. Having a feature does not demonstrate that its implementation suits a particular store.

Inspect the actual output of the theme and active apps. Several extensions may claim the same task. Establish which component produces each result before adding more or disabling existing ones.

Which page should answer which query?

Someone comparing a product group usually needs a different landing page from someone searching for a model number. Map important queries to categories, products and supporting guides. Do not create a separate page for every similar wording.

For example, a workshop supplier might use a torque-wrench category for selection and a product page for a specific model’s details. Each needs a clear purpose and useful connections to the other.

What belongs in the initial review?

Select a few commercially important pages and check six points:

  • Intent: does the page fit the expected selection or purchase decision?
  • Accessibility: is the intended page public and meant to be indexed?
  • Title: does it describe the actual offer clearly and distinctively?
  • Content: does it answer relevant questions without unsupported promises?
  • Links: can users reach it from appropriate categories and content?
  • Presentation: are essential text and product details present in the actual output?

Record a specific URL and expected correction for each finding. “Improve SEO” is not an actionable brief. “The category does not explain which connector sizes are available” can be addressed and checked.

When is another app worthwhile?

An app can simplify recurring work. Assess its scope, effects and maintenance: which data does it alter, can changes be checked and reversed, and will it add ongoing costs or scripts? Have the intended function demonstrated on representative pages.

Avoid stacking tools with overlapping tasks merely because different audits display warnings. An automatically generated description may be formally complete yet unhelpful to buyers. The merchant remains responsible for accuracy.

How should results be assessed?

Compare relevant page and query groups across suitable periods. Separate branded from generic queries and account for seasonality, promotions and catalogue changes. One day’s performance cannot establish the effect of a content edit.

Check whether visitors reach products they can buy. More search visits to unavailable or unsuitable items are not automatically a business success. Our online-store SEO priorities connect technical findings with commercial importance.

When should PrestaShop be considered?

If specific content, data or operational requirements repeatedly encounter constraints, we assess PrestaShop as an alternative. We value the ability to implement tailored requirements. A move still requires data planning, technical ownership and preservation of existing entry pages; it does not improve rankings automatically.

First establish whether the constraint belongs to the platform or its current configuration. Our switch-or-optimise guide develops that decision. Existing PrestaShop stores have a dedicated SEO settings guide. Both start with a verifiable task rather than a blanket platform judgement.
