Magento to PrestaShop: what to resolve before migration
Identify essential functions, test product models and establish when PrestaShop offers a suitable new foundation.
Quick answer
A Magento-to-PrestaShop migration starts by matching the functions and data actually in use. Test variants, pricing rules, customer groups and integrations with representative cases. PrestaShop is particularly attractive when you want a customisable store with a clearly defined scope. A simple export does not replace that assessment.

“We only use part of Magento.” That can be a useful reason to review the installation, but it does not prove a migration will be easy. A few visible features may depend on several custom rules. Before moving Magento to PrestaShop, we establish what the store actually needs to do each day.
Is PrestaShop suitable for the existing Magento store?
We regard PrestaShop as a preferred option to assess for merchants who want individual development and are prepared to organise responsibility for operation and customisation. Business fit matters more than product count alone.
A retailer with standardised products and clear customer groups has different needs from a company running complex quotation processes across business units. For demanding workflows, a small feasibility test should establish how they would work in PrestaShop. If substantial proven logic would need rebuilding, remaining on the existing platform belongs in the comparison too.
What needs to come across from Magento?
Separate data, appearance and behaviour. Product information can be transferred when the destination model and import process support it. A theme does not become a PrestaShop theme through that transfer. Nor does a custom extension’s behaviour emerge simply because its data is present.
Adobe’s export documentation describes filters and selectable attributes. An initial test should therefore establish whether the file contains the agreed scope, not merely whether a file was produced. Confirm the actual Magento version and extensions before committing to a transfer list.
Which test cases reveal fit early?
We would select six commercially important cases:
- Variant product: selection, SKU, image and stock agree.
- Price rule: an actual customer group receives the intended price.
- Order: payment, delivery and downstream transfer work.
- Account: login and available history match the agreed scope.
- Content: categories, languages and product information remain connected clearly.
- Integration: changes reach the correct record once.
Use examples from the merchant’s own range. An arbitrary demonstration product cannot validate an unusual but valuable exception. Anonymise test data where real customer information is unnecessary to demonstrate the behaviour.
Why do attributes need particular attention?
A field name does not explain how a value is used. “Colour” might be descriptive information, a filter or part of an orderable variation. Those roles need separate consideration in the destination model.
Consider a hypothetical spare-parts retailer: one feature describes material, while another determines selectable size. Treating them identically during import may produce visible information but an incorrect purchasing structure. We record the mapping with example values and an expected outcome, making discussion between the merchant, developer and catalogue team more concrete.
Can existing integrations simply continue?
An existing connection provides a starting point, not a compatibility guarantee. PrestaShop documents a Webservice API for interacting with store resources. Connector support and the treatment of custom fields require separate checks.
At sjmedia, we connect this assessment with PrestaShop implementation planning. After migration, ownership of prices, stock and customer data should be explicit. Otherwise, a one-off move can create ongoing manual reconciliation.
How does the assessment become a useful project scope?
List retained functions, deliberately removed functions and unresolved decisions separately. The proposal should also cover trial migration, business acceptance, switchover and subsequent support. A blanket savings claim would be unjustified without that foundation.
Our Magento alternative service explains the delivery scope. The guide to transferring data and module content develops the technical distinctions. Start with a representative test dataset: it reveals suitable elements and necessary custom work earlier than a complete import.
